Diabetic Foot Ulceration

Management of a diabetic foot ulceration should be in collaboration with a Multi-disciplinary specialist team. Such teams may include Diabetologists, Specialist Podiatrists, Vascular & / or Orthopedic surgeons, Microbiologists, Orthotists, Tissue Viability Nurses, Diabetes Specialist Nurses & Plaster Technicians working in conjunction with the wider community and primary care teams.

Treatment may include one or a combination of:

  • Debridement (removal of dead tissue / callus)
  • Off – loading e.g. Total contact cast
  • Antibiotics for infection
  • Custom made footwear and insoles
  • Vascular surgery e.g. angioplasty / bypass
  • Orthopaedic surgery
  • Change of medication to improve diabetes control / cardiovascular risk
  • Specialist dressings
